Side gigs for writers: Friend or faux?

Yesterday my brother told me about a website that has little writing tasks that a writer could be paid for completing. When I first heard about the site, I was so excited! Me, getting paid to write! It’s like my dream come true. Even if I wasn’t paid enough to quit my day job, just getting a little bit for my writing would be huge for me.

But when I went to the site, the first task I clicked on ended up being a scam. Now I’m wondering if all the other “tasks” are scams too. Is getting paid for freelance writing just a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow? Because sometimes it feels like I chase a few too many rainbows. This isn’t the first time I’ve tried to get a writing side gig only to find that it’s a scam or the jobs are all filled or the website is down.

Has anyone out there had success with these kinds of websites? Inquiring minds want to know!
